L&T gets new water supply contract from Uttar Pradesh government

The state government of Uttar Pradesh has given fresh orders to L&T Construction for the development of a water supply scheme in the state. The Water & Effluent Treatment Business of L&T has received orders from the State Water & Sanitation Mission of the UP government that will benefit the Hanumanganj multi-group of villages.

These villages in the districts of Ballia and Firozabad will get a fillip of fresh water supply, L&T has disclosed about the water supply infrastructure order in a mandatory stock exchange filing.

The water supply infrastructure scheme will benefit almost 51 lakh rural residents in Uttar Pradesh. The state wants to connect all of its rural households to drinking water taps by 2024 under Jal Jeevan Mission. L&T calls it as a large order that is in the range of Rs 2,500 cr to 5,000 cr.

L&T said in the filing, “The scope of both the projects includes design & construction of 1 intake structure, 1 water treatment plant of capacity 148 MLD, transmission and distribution pipelines of 5534 Kms, 13 clear water reservoirs of aggregate capacity 25 ML, 504 overhead service reservoirs of aggregate capacity 115.4 ML, 13 pumphouses, 3.81 lakh house service connections and associated electromechanical & instrumentation works and 10 years operation & maintenance.”

The L&T water supply project will be based on automation. This means that water quantity input and output along with the quality shall take place through SCADA and other instrumentation works. L&T is working on 6 in seven districts of Uttar Pradesh for the department. These projects involve surface water based projects and water supply projects in the rural areas.

Recently, the Jal Shakti Ministry patted the efforts of the Uttar Pradesh government for crossing 50% mark in supply tap water connections to rural households in the state. The ja Jeevan Mission, that seeks to provide drinking water on tap across all households in India, has a budgeted outlay of  almost Rs 70,000 crore for 2023-24. The mission is expected to achieve key goals from 2024-25 onwards, before winding down.
