HM Amit Shah inaugurates Gujarat’s largest waste-to-energy plant in Ahmedabad
Using RDF-based Martin Reverse Grate Firing Technology, the project incinerates municipal solid waste in boilers to produce 65 tons per hour of steam, which powers turbines to produce 15 megawatts of electricity that is fed directly into the grid.
In a momentous development, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has inaugurated Gujarat’s largest waste-to-energy plant in Piplaj, Ahmedabad. The new project has come up as part of the ‘Clean Ahmedabad’ initiative.
As per the details shared, this facility is developed in partnership with Jindal Urban Waste Management Ltd. and can process 1,000 metric tons of waste daily. The waste to power project will generate 15 megawatts (MW) of electricity per hour.
The inauguration ceremony included Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Health Minister Rushikesh Patel, and Minister of State for Cooperation and Rural Industries Jagdish Vishwakarma. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), which oversees large volumes of waste at the Pirana site, collaborated with the private sector to launch this innovative waste-to-energy solution to improve waste management and sustainability.
This facility not only supports cleaner urban spaces and renewable energy production but also promotes environmental conservation.
Using RDF-based Martin Reverse Grate Firing Technology, it incinerates municipal solid waste in boilers to produce 65 tons per hour of steam, which powers turbines to produce 15 megawatts of electricity that is fed directly into the grid. The plant, constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 375 crore, marks a significant step forward in managing Ahmedabad’s solid waste.
Waste to biofuels projects have begun to throng Gujarat which has a thriving agriculture and animal husbandry sector along with rising urbanization. Recently, sustainable energy solutions provider Nexgen Energia said that it will be investing Rs 3,000 crore in a comprehensive state-of-the-art Compressed Biogas (CBG) facility in Gujarat.
Similarly, Suzuki Motor Corporation will be investing more than Rs 250 crore to establish four biogas plants in collaboration with Banas Dairy in Gujarat.
