“We have come to India after installing 5000+ gas analyzers worldwide” – Martin Grepmeier, CEO, Awite Bioenergie GmbH
Martin Grepmeier, founder and CEO of Germany-based Awite Bioenergie GmbH, recently made his first visit to India, where he shared his excitement about the country’s dynamic and promising biogas market. In an engaging discussion during India Energy Week 2025 with Subhash Chandra Yadav from I Am Renew, Grepmeier delved into Awite’s journey, its cutting-edge gas analysis solutions, and the company’s global expertise. He also highlighted their partnerships in India, post-sales support, and ambitious future plans. With over 5,000 installations worldwide, Awite continues to lead the way in gas analysis technology. Dive into the full conversation here.

1. What is Awite and what does it have to offer to the Indian biogas industry?
Martin Grepmeier: Awite is specialist in ‘gas analysis solutions’ for renewable gases, such as Biogas, Biomethane, Digester Gas, Landfill Gas, Sewage Gas, Pyrolysis etc. The company was founded in 2000 and for the last 25 years we have been offering gas analysers for above mentioned renewable applications. Worldwide, we have installed 5000 of Awite analysers.
2. Could you share some insights into Awite’s contributions to the global biogas sector, with a focus on its impact in Europe & other overseas markets?
Martin Grepmeier: Well, as we have 5000 installations worldwide in renewable gas applications, 30% of them are in Germany, 30% in the rest of Europe with focus in Italy, France, Austria, Spain and 40% elsewhere. With these numbers, Awite is one of the leaders globally for gas analysers in this specific application. We are a medium size company, specialised and focussed on this market. Awite has two fully owned subsidiaries in Italy and Brazil and close to 30 international sales and service partners. In India we have partnered Armatec India.
3. Why do you think India is important for Awite?
Martin Grepmeier: India is one of the fastest growing markets in biogas and biogas upgrading applications. That’s why we started the partnership with Armatec which has been active in this Indian market for more than 5 years and its Indian leadership is biogas expert.
4. How do you perceive the opportunities and challenges here?
Martin Grepmeier: For Awite and for me personally, this is the first visit to India, means I will be careful with receiving opportunities in detail and hope for understanding. I tried to understand the Indian market and the way business and sales are done here. We had very interesting and technical communication with a couple of companies being active in site construction in India. So let me say, the first impression makes us hungry for more.
5. What differentiates Awite products from other players in the biogas tech space?
Martin Grepmeier: Awite does not come from other industries and looks for opportunities in the biogas market. We have been active in the biogas market since our birth and probably the only company being exclusive here. We possess detailed know-how of processes. Each biogas process looks different, so why should analysers all look the same. We do customize solutions for fixed analysers and branch optimised solutions for mobile units. Our analyser, optical sensors, electronics, software, coolers, PLC, material, UI are home made by Awite known for their high quality and long life. Besides, we are a service focussed company and we stay with our partners and close to the customer for sales and after sales services.
6. What challenges have you encountered in India and similar markets, and how Awite plans to navigate them successfully?
Martin Grepmeier: You need patience; you should plan with reasonable numbers and you should look that the first applications are successful and offer nice services to keep systems smooth. In all the countries where we stepped in, we noted that service is the key for future success. This is what all countries have in common, no matter which language they speak.
What are your short-term and long-term goals with regards to India?
Martin Grepmeier: In the short term, we would get into the market with one, two or three interesting customers. We have already shown them how Awite products are operating. In the long term, I see a long partnership with Armatec and see success together. We have no plans as of now to open our own branch.
7. Pricing plays a pivotal role in the Indian market. How does Awite ensure its products are competitively priced without compromising on quality?
Martin Grepmeier: Pricing plays a role all over the world. I noted that India is sometimes a bit more focused on this, but anyway we think that quality and performance is as much important as the price. Investments in analysers compared to other parts of the biogas (upgrading) site are negligible. A perfect fit analyser allows you to run the biogas site safely (biological watch) and secures the quality of gas for any use.
We hope to be back in India. We hope to see our first successes and start our activity for a long term as we do everywhere in the world. Awite is known for work, quality and partnerships.
