Subsidiaries of Suzuki & NDDB to establish biogas projects
Suzuki Motor Corporation has announced that it has entered into an agreement to invest in NDDB Mrida Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB). The agreement has been done through its subsidiary company called Suzuki R&D Center India Private Limited to give stimulus to biogas production using the cow manure.
The signing ceremony took place at NDDB headquarters in Anand, Gujarat and the ceremony was attended by NDDB Executive Director S. Rajeev, Suzuki President Toshihiro Suzuki, and key representatives from India’s dairy industry.
The agreement focuses on establishing biogas plants that will convert cow dung into biogas. The obtained biogas will be then purified and compressed into biomethane gas for use in vehicles.
This biogas initiative of Suzuki also aims to promote environmental conservation, support agricultural development, and provide clean energy.
Suzuki Motor Corporation plans to invest over ₹250 crores to establish five biogas CNG plants in Banaskantha, Gujarat. These plants, expected to become operational by 2025, will play a crucial role in Suzuki’s efforts to achieve carbon neutrality in India.
This significant investment highlights Suzuki’s commitment to sustainable energy and rural mobility solutions. NDDB Mrida, founded in July 2022, operates biogas plants across India, using cow dung to promote environmental sustainability and agricultural progress. Suzuki aims to expand its biogas operations in collaboration with dairy cooperatives nationwide through Mrida.
Moreover, Suzuki is advancing rural mobility services by promoting biogas-fueled CNG vehicles, starting with the Banaskantha district. In July, Suzuki signed a tripartite memorandum of understanding (MoU) with NDDB and Banas Dairy to establish the fifth biogas plant and further enhance rural mobility. This initiative is part of Suzuki’s broader strategy to contribute to carbon neutrality in India.
In June this year, Maruti Suzuki India launched a pilot biogas plant at its Manesar facility (Haryana), with a commitment to invest Rs 450 crore in renewable energy initiatives over the next three years producing 0.2 tonnes of biogas daily.
