With an objective to usher a new era of sustainable development in Odisha, Singapore-based energy giant Sembcorp Industries signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the Odisha government to explore the establishment of a green hydrogen production facility and an industrial park in the state.

The agreements were signed by Sembcorp Green Hydrogen India Private Limited (SGHIPL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sembcorp, and the Industrial Promotion and Investment Corporation Limited (Ipicol). The proposed green hydrogen facility is projected to produce up to 720,000 metric tonnes per year of green hydrogen and its derivatives. Strategically located in Odisha, the facility is expected to create over 2,000 jobs during its operational phase, contributing significantly to the local economy.

Sembcorp said that its expertise lies in delivering sustainable solutions for energy transition and urban development, leveraging its global experience and sectoral expertise. This project aligns with the company’s mission to support India’s transition to a low-carbon economy.

Moreover, Sembcorp Development Ltd, another wholly-owned subsidiary, signed a non-binding MoU with the Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDCO). This agreement focuses on exploring the development of an industrial park in Odisha, further strengthening the state’s industrial capabilities.

The signing ceremony was attended by key dignitaries, including Singapore’s Minister for Transport and Second Minister for Finance, Chee Hong Tat, and Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, during the visit of Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam to Odisha. Singapore has signed 8 MoUs to usher a new era of development in the coastal state of India.

Previously, bilateral framework was created between the Governments of Singapore and India aimed at enhancing cooperation in six critical areas. This included sustainability. Odisha Chief Minister had met with Sembcorp executives during his visit to Singapore in November 2024 and discussed renewable energy initiatives and Sembcorp’s upcoming green ammonia project in Odisha.

Recently, Hygenco Green Energies has partnered with Denmark-based Topsoe to develop its green ammonia plant in Gopalpur district of Odisha  that will be operationalised by 2027, one of the first in the sub-continent. Similarly, India’s ACME Group and Japan’s IHI Corporation recently signed an offtake term sheet for supply of green ammonia from Odisha to Japan with an investment of upto Rs 59,000 crore.
