The green hydrogen story in India is finding some speed now. In a fresh development, the state-owned Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has invited bids for the annual supply of 539,000 metric tonnes (MT) of green ammonia through its new tender.
This initiative is part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission’s (NGHM) SIGHT Programme.
According to the announcement, SECI has issued a Request for Selection (RfS) for green ammonia producers. The selection process will involve cost-based competitive bidding under Mode 2A of the SIGHT Programme, managed by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE). The bidding process will include e-bidding followed by an e-Reverse Auction, aiming to allocate the total available capacity of 539,000 MT per year. The green ammonia produced will be supplied to fertilizer companies.
Previously, the MNRE released guidelines for implementing the SIGHT Programme Component II: Incentive for Procurement of Green Ammonia Production (Mode 2A). SECI has been designated as the implementing agency for this scheme.
Under the SIGHT Programme, MNRE has already allocated 412,000 MT per year of green hydrogen production capacity and 1.5 GW per year of electrolyzer manufacturing capacity.
In January this year, SECI selected Reliance Green Hydrogen and Green Chemicals (Reliance), HHP Two (Hygenco), ACME Cleantech Solutions, Greenko ZeroC (Greenko) and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) through a tender for the establishment of production facilities generating 450,000 metric tons (MT) of green hydrogen per annum.
Launched on January 4, 2023, with a budget of Rs. 19,744 crores extending up to FY 2029-30, the National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to contribute to India’s self-reliance in clean energy and inspire global energy transitions. The mission is expected to significantly decarbonize the economy, reduce dependence on fossil fuel imports, and establish India as a leader in green hydrogen technology and markets.
