₹200 crore waste-to-energy project proposed in cleanest city Indore
The initiative has been included in the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) budget for the financial year 2024-25, presented by the mayor.
Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav has announced that a waste-to-energy plant will be established at a cost of approximately Rs 200 crore to generate electricity from garbage in the country’s cleanest city. This initiative has been included in the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) budget for the financial year 2024-25, presented by the mayor.
“Prioritizing the conversion of waste into energy, we plan to set up a new plant at a cost of about Rs 200 crore. This plant represents a significant step towards environmental protection,” Bhargav stated.
The proposed plant is expected to process 500 tonnes of waste daily and generate six megawatts of electricity.
During the budget presentation, the mayor outlined an estimated expenditure of Rs 8,232.26 crore for the current financial year, with projected earnings of Rs 8,302.26 crore from various sources.
Additionally, to combat air and noise pollution, Bhargav mentioned that 19 traffic signals in Indore have been identified where drivers will be encouraged to turn off their vehicle engines until the light turns green.
The upcoming project underscored Indore’s commitment to environmental conservation through waste management strategies. It is noteworthy that Indore has been ranked as the cleanest city in India for the seventh year in a row under the Central government’s annual Swachh Survekshan Awards 2023.
The Swachh Survekshan survey is at the centre of the Central Government’s Swachh Bharat mission, which was launched as one of the big-ticket initiatives by Narendra Modi government in its first term in power. The survey records a city’s performance on 46 parameters, including waste collection, inclusive toilets and improved plastic waste management.
India’s largest compressed biogas (CBG) plant is already operational in Indore. Recently, the biogas plant clocked its 100 per cent utilisation level.
