Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to lay the foundation stone for India’s largest NTPC Green Energy Ltd (NGEL) Green Hydrogen Hub at Pudimadaka, which is nearly 50 km from Visakhapatnam. The event is expected to take place on November 29.

With an objective to produce 5 million metric tons of green hydrogen annually by 2030, the Central Government launched Green Hydrogen Mission in 2021. This is to solidify the country’s position as a global leader in the green hydrogen economy.

At the center of this mission is NTPC Green Energy Ltd’s ground-breaking project, the Green Hydrogen Hub at Pudimadaka. Spanning 1,600 acres, this visionary initiative is set to transform Andhra Pradesh into a green energy powerhouse and establish India as a global leader in green hydrogen production.

The NTPC green hydrogen hub is expected to attract an investment of Rs 1.85 lakh crore and it will be among the largest in the world. The hub will be producing 1,500 tonnes of green hydrogen daily.

Additionally, it will generate 4,500 tonnes of green ammonia, 1,500 tonnes of green methanol, and 1,500 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) or green urea every day, reinforcing India’s role as a leading exporter of green products.

Key infrastructure supporting the project includes an 80-million-liter-per-day desalination plant, an advanced GIS substation, and efficient port logistics, ensuring smooth and sustainable operations at every stage.

NTPC has been collaborating with various state governments like Rajasthan, Maharashtra & Andhra Pradesh to five new fillip to the green hydrogen generation in the country.

Recently, the NTPC R&D wing NETRA announced that it embarks to set up green hydrogen production plant using Plasma Oxy Gasification of municipal waste and agri-waste technology. NTPC said that upon set-up, it shall be a unique plant globally, wherein plasma assisted ‘oxy gasification’ of MSW-RDF/Agri-Waste shall be carried to produce ‘very high quality syn-gas’, from which high purity hydrogen ( over 99.9%) shall be separated using a novel configuration of ‘gas membrane’ and ‘pressure swing adsorption’.
