Ohmium to set-up Rs 400 cr green energy plant in Tamil Nadu
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for this initiative has been signed in San Francisco with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin.
American renewable energy major and electrolyzer maker Ohmium is set to invest Rs 400 crore in Tamil Nadu to establish a manufacturing unit in the Chengalpattu district.
This facility of Ohmium is expected to create around 500 jobs. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for this initiative has been signed in San Francisco with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin. The Chief Minister was present and he is on a two-week visit to the US aimed at attracting investments.
Ohmium specializes in designing and manufacturing green hydrogen production and scalable Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyzer systems. The company has established green hydrogen pipelines across the US, Mexico, Europe and Asia. The Chengalpattu unit will focus on manufacturing electrolyzers and green hydrogen.
Chief Minister Stalin took to his X handle to describe the MoU signing as another successful day in San Francisco.
Stalin tweeted about the Ohmium deal, “This marks a significant step in nurturing the ecosystem for green energy production and fueling a sustainable future!”
An official press statement held that during an investors’ conference in San Francisco, the state signed MoUs with six global companies—Nokia, PayPal, Yield Engineering Systems, Microchip Technology, Infinx Healthcare, and Applied Materials—resulting in a Rs 900 crore investment, which is expected to create 4,100 jobs in Chennai, Coimbatore, and Madurai.
On August 30, the Chief Minister met with senior executives from Apple, Google, and Microsoft, inviting them to invest in Tamil Nadu. He also signed an MoU with Google to establish Artificial Intelligence (AI) research labs in the state.
Stalin addressed the Tamil diaspora in San Francisco subsequently. He highlighted the strong ties between India and the US, noting that according to Gallup, India ranks seventh among countries most favored by Americans. He also noted in his speech that Indians are the second-largest group of immigrants in the US.
Key players like Reliance and Sembcorp have already made announcements of heavy investments in green hydrogen & other clean energy in Tamil Nadu. Recently, NLC India Ltd. (NLCIL) said that it is about to launch a pilot project in Neyveli focused on producing green hydrogen.
