NLCIL to establish pilot green hydrogen project in Tamil Nadu
NLC India Ltd. (NLCIL) is set to launch a pilot project in Neyveli focused on producing green hydrogen, aligning with India’s Green Hydrogen Mission. Prasanna Kumar Motupalli, Chairman and Managing Director of NLCIL, shared details of the plan, which includes using 4 MW of solar energy to power an electrolyser, demonstrating NLCIL’s commitment to sustainable energy.
Motupalli also discussed NLCIL long-term plans, which include coal-based power projects in Jharsuguda and Sambalpur districts of Odisha, as well as renewable energy projects in Rajasthan (810 MW) and Khavada, Gujarat (600 MW).
Additionally, he announced that NLCIL has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd. (RVUNL) to form a joint venture for establishing a 500 MW lignite-based power plant and a 2000 MW solar power plant.
Speaking at the 78th Independence Day event at NLCIL Bharathi Stadium, Motupalli expressed confidence in meeting the ambitious goals of adding 20 GW of power generation capacity and achieving a mining capacity of 100 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) by 2030.
He highlighted NLCIL’s significant accomplishments, including a Profit After Tax of ₹566.69 crore, reflecting a 37.02% increase over the previous year.
Tamil Nadu is one top states in the country when it comes to the renewable energy development in both all segments including solar, wind and green hydrogen. Recently, the green hydrogen unit of Singapore’s Sembcorp Industries Ltd had commenced initial contract signings for a Rs 36,238 crore investment to construct a green hydrogen facility in Thoothukudi district of the state. The new projects will be developed in association with Maire’s Tecnimont and Nextchem.
At the beginning of this year, Reliance Industries’ CMD Mukesh Ambani revealed at the Tamil Nadu Global Investor Meet (GIM) in Chennai that Reliance Industries Ltd will embark on fresh investments in green hydrogen and various renewable energy sectors in Tamil Nadu.
