New cow dung-based biogas project to come up in Noida
The new biogas facility will be built with the help of HCL Foundation and consume cow dung produced in the animal shelter that has more than 1000 stray cows.
Noida Authority is mulling to build a biogas project at the renowned animal shelter situated in Sector 94 with a vision to recycle the waste of the city efficiently. The Noida Authority officials held that the biogas plant will process cow dung produced in the shelter.
The biogas plant will also be preventing the cow dung from becoming a nuisance in nearby areas.
The facility, which houses approximately 1,000 stray cows and other animals, presents a significant waste management challenge. To address this, the authority plans to convert the dung into biogas, promoting sustainable waste disposal.
Sanjay Kumar Khatri, Additional Chief Executive Officer (ACEO) of Noida Authority, directed the health department to complete the project within three months using corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds. The budget details are yet to be finalized. As per reports, the HCL Foundation will finance and build the plant through its CSR initiative.
Recently inspections were conducted of the animal shelters in Sector 94 and some other sectors of the city. Noida has two primary animal shelters—one in Sector 94 and another in Nagli Wazidpur near Sector 135—where waste management remains a key priority for the authorities.
In October 2024, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath unveiled the state government’s plans to set up compressed biogas plants using cow dung, where the Uttar Pradesh government would be offering land for these green energy initiatives.
