Japanese biofuel innovator Euglena Co. has tied-up with Malaysia’s PETRONAS Research to advance large-scale production technology for microalgae which is emerging as a promising resource for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and next-generation biodiesel.

Euglena says that the partnership represents a major stride in promoting sustainable biofuel production and curbing carbon emissions.

PETRONAS Research is a subsidiary of the Malaysian energy giant Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) which is collaborating closely with Euglena Co. on a significant research initiative.

This joint venture aims to enhance technologies across the “entire microalgae production chain,” from cultivation and harvesting to oil extraction and the use of by-products like defatted algae. Euglena has ultimate goal to develop efficient methods for producing biofuel feedstock, contributing to a larger project involving PETRONAS and Enilive SpA.

This project, which will establish a biofuel production facility, moved forward with a final investment decision on July 26, 2024.

In addition to its focus on sustainable biofuels, Euglena Co. is partnering with PETRONAS Research to tackle climate change also. By combining their expertise, both organizations aim to develop practical solutions that support a more sustainable future.

About two decades ago, Euglena Co. made a groundbreaking achievement by developing the world’s first outdoor mass cultivation technology for edible Euglena. This innovation set the stage for the company’s commitment to sustainability and its diverse ventures.

Driven by a sustainability ethos, Euglena has expanded its operations to include the development and sale of food and cosmetics derived from microalgae like Euglena and Chlorella. These products offer consumers innovative, eco-friendly options that tap into the nutritional power of microalgae. Euglena is also at the forefront of producing biofuels, a renewable energy alternative derived from sustainable resources.

Euglena’s expertise extends beyond food and energy, as the company also offers genetic analysis services, contributing to scientific research and advancements in microalgae.

Moreover, Euglena is committed to sustainable agriculture, exploring novel ways to use unused resources and promote environmentally conscious farming practices.
