Microalgae: New biofuels’ revolution arena for Euglena, Petronas
The joint venture between the two firms aims to enhance technologies across the “entire microalgae production chain,” from cultivation and harvesting to oil extraction and the use of by-products like defatted algae.
Japanese biofuel innovator Euglena Co. has tied-up with Malaysia’s PETRONAS Research to advance large-scale production technology for microalgae which is emerging as a promising resource for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and next-generation biodiesel.
Euglena says that the partnership represents a major stride in promoting sustainable biofuel production and curbing carbon emissions.
PETRONAS Research is a subsidiary of the Malaysian energy giant Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) which is collaborating closely with Euglena Co. on a significant research initiative.
This joint venture aims to enhance technologies across the “entire microalgae production chain,” from cultivation and harvesting to oil extraction and the use of by-products like defatted algae. Euglena has ultimate goal to develop efficient methods for producing biofuel feedstock, contributing to a larger project involving PETRONAS and Enilive SpA.
This project, which will establish a biofuel production facility, moved forward with a final investment decision on July 26, 2024.
