IRM Energy, GAIL & IAV Biogas sign agreement to infuse biogas into CGD network in Tamil Nadu
The novel initiative under CBG-CGD Synchronization Scheme is expected to bolster India’s energy security, accelerate the shift toward waste-to-energy solutions, and promote sustainable rural development.

In a key step toward advancing clean energy adoption, Ahmedabad headquartered IRM Energy Ltd has signed a Tripartite Agreement (TPA) with IAV Biogas Pvt. Ltd. and GAIL (India) Ltd to support the integration of Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) into India’s City Gas Distribution (CGD) network. The agreement is signed under the aegis of Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas’s CBG-CGD Synchronization Scheme. The will enable the supply of CBG in the Namakkal and Tiruchirappalli regions of Tamil Nadu.
Under the agreement, IRM Energy will offtake up to 3,000 standard cubic meters per day (SCMD) of CBG from IAV Biogas, which will then be distributed through IRM’s CGD network in the two districts. This initiative is expected to bolster India’s energy security, accelerate the shift toward waste-to-energy solutions, and promote sustainable rural development.
The CBG-CGD Synchronization Scheme aims to blend bio-gas with natural gas across the CGD network, supporting India’s broader climate goals and Net-Zero commitments. By using agricultural waste and organic residues to produce biogas, the initiative complements the SATAT (Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation) scheme, which encourages the use of clean fuels and helps CGD companies meet their mandatory blending targets.
M.K. Sharma, CEO, IRM Energy Limited, held, “This agreement is a step forward towards integration of sustainable practices in energy distribution. We are proud to collaborate with GAIL and IAV Biogas Pvt. Ltd. in bringing cleaner fuel solutions to the forefront. This step not only aligns with our strategic vision but also contributes to India’s mission of becoming a greener and more self-reliant energy nation.”
The agreement signing ceremony was attended by senior representatives from all three companies, highlighting the importance of collaboration between public and private sectors in driving innovation, environmental stewardship, and inclusive economic growth.
