IOCL presents green hydrogen fuel cell bus to Indian Navy
The IOCL and the Indian Navy have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to lead the deployment of hydrogen fuel cell technology for heavy-duty e-mobility.
Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) has made a significant step towards promoting sustainable, eco-friendly transportation by handing over a state-of-the-art green hydrogen fuel cell bus to the Indian Navy. This milestone was marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between IOCL and the Indian Navy to lead the deployment of hydrogen fuel cell technology for heavy-duty e-mobility.
The MoU was exchanged at Nau Sena Bhawan, New Delhi, in the presence of Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of Naval Staff, S M Vaidya, Chairman of IOCL, and senior officials from both IOCL and the Indian Navy. The signatories were Vice Admiral Deepak Kapoor, Controller of Logistics, Indian Navy, and Dr. Kannan Chandrasekaran, Executive Director, IOCL.
IOCL said that it currently operates 15 fuel cell buses in Delhi-NCR and Gujarat, with a total mileage of 300,000 kilometers. The company’s each bus expected to run at least 20,000 kilometers.
This initiative aims to promote hydrogen and fuel cell technology for heavy-duty e-mobility, positioning the Indian Navy as a pioneer in evaluating this technology in collaboration with IOCL, India’s premier energy company.
In February 2024, India’s premier green hydrogen fuel cell bus was launched and showcased at India Energy Week in Goa.
IOCL had recently presented the hydrogen-powered fuel cell bus to Army Chief General Manoj Pande for demonstration trials to explore the adoption of fuel cell technology for public transportation. The bus can seat 37 passengers and boasts an impressive range of 250-300 km on a full 30 kg tank of hydrogen fuel.
