Green Hydrogen International (GHI) – a US based start-up – has declared that it will construct a 60 GW renewable hydrogen project in the town of Duval County in south Texas. The project will be powered by wind and solar power. The project will have its own salt cavern for storage.
The company says that it will also purchase additional renewable energy from the ERCOT grid during periods of low prices to manufacture the green hydrogen.
The company adds that the facility post development will also produce clean rocket fuel for SpaceX, owned by Elon Musk.
GHI says that the project is expected to produce more than 2.5 million tonnes of green hydrogen a year upon completion. The output is equal to about 3.5% of the world’s grey hydrogen production that takes place today.
The Hydrogen manufacturer declared that it will also establish a mega hydrogen storage facility in the Piedras Pintas Salt Dome. Salt domes, because they are impermeable, make for good natural storage options for oil and gas in particular.
GIH says that the large hydrogen storage will be connected with pipelines to the port cities of Corpus Christi and Brownsville. These are at the Mexico border where SpaceX is located.
GHI also added that in the first phase of development of the Hydrogen City, 2GW hydrogen production will begin in 2026. This will be stored in the two caverns situated in the salt dome. It said that access to salt storage is critical for scaling-up green hydrogen production as it allows for maximum utilization of electrolysers and serves as a buffer between variable wind and solar production and final delivery of green hydrogen to customers.
GHI informed that the company can create in excess of 50 caverns in the salt dome that can help provide as much as 6TWh of energy storage and turn the dome into a major green hydrogen storage hub. This can be similar to the role Henry Hub plays in the natural gas market.
The company is also finding diverse end uses for the hydrogen that it will produce to expand the cleanliness in the processes. This would include sustainable rocket fuel, clean aviation fuel, green ammonia for fertilizer production, a substitute for natural gas in power plants and even exports to Asia etc.
Andy Steinhubl, Board Member of GHI says, “Hydrogen City is a project perfectly positioned near low-cost renewable resources, plenty of available land, salt domes, and proximity to the large energy port of Corpus Christi. It will be a world cost leader and position GHI to take advantage of the growing demand for green hydrogen.”
