Carbon Farming Germany (CFG) introduces BeyondZero, the world’s inaugural CO2-negative biofuel, marking a pioneering advancement in sustainable fuel production. By ingeniously integrating biogas production and carbon storage in biochar, BeyondZero achieves remarkable sustainability.
CFG says that external laboratory findings validate its efficacy, demonstrating the ability to produce biochar from biogas digestate and securely store its carbon content for over a millennium.
With escalating pressure from EU CO2 reduction targets, fuel suppliers face a compelling mandate to swiftly adopt renewable solutions. In response, CFG addresses this imperative with a fuel that not only mitigates future CO2 emissions but also reverses historical carbon footprints. This transformative effect stems from the groundbreaking conversion of biogas digestate into biochar.
Marc Feldmann, CEO, CFG, said, “BeyondZero provides an answer to the climate targets in the transportation sector. The transport sector is extremely difficult to decarbonize. Our mission is to show that industrial fuel supply and climate protection can come from a single source to ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.”
The inaugural plant by CFG will seamlessly fulfill the annual needs of 300 large trucks in a CO2-neutral manner. Moreover, it is poised to remove over 75,000 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere annually, equivalent to the emissions of 7,500 flight tickets from Frankfurt to New York. The resultant biochar is channelled into the agricultural sector, empowering farmers to enhance crop yields by up to 15%.
Marc Feldmann, emphasizing the global viability of their concept, notes, “We have secured patents in the EU and the USA, and through our successful test run and validated laboratory outcomes, we’ve demonstrated the efficacy of our approach.”
Also, the forthcoming final development phase for the first plant is scheduled for the next year, with construction set to commence in 2025. CFG anticipates supplying BeyondZero to Germany’s transportation sector for the first time in 2026.
