Ohmium International, a company specialized in the design, manufacture, and deployment of PEM Electrolyzers, (Polymer Electrolyte Membrane ) and IIT Madras Research Park (IITMRP), India’s first university-based research park, have announced an R&D partnership which will accelerate the production implementation of PEM electrolyzer technology enhancements.
Professor Ashok Jhunjhunwala, Founder and Director of IITMRP, said: “I’m accustomed to seeing a cycle time from research to industry that’s measured in years. But with Ohmium’s unique electrolyzer technology it will only take a fraction of that. It’s incredibly exciting!”.
Arne Ballentine, CEO of Ohmium International said: “This partnership will enable Ohmium to rapidly translate technology advances in performance and cost reduction into actual production at our Bangalore Gigafactory. The synergies created are very powerful”.
Professor Jhunjhunwala continued: “Electrolyzers used to produce hydrogen for industry are typically built to industrial scale. Electrochemical cells don’t care what size they are – and Ohmium’s design is on a human scale, where we can rapidly work to accelerate the R&D of components on this scale. We can make use of Green Hydrogen in Cement & Steel plants and for manufacturing of Green Ammonia. Ohmium’s presence at IITMRP will help India move towards net-zero early.
Dr. Chock Karuppiah, Chief Technology Officer, Ohmium, concluded: “IITM’s young faculties are leaders in electrolyzer and electrochemical research. Together, we’re creating a world-class green hydrogen innovation center”.
Cost effective green hydrogen – no-carbon hydrogen made from water electrolysis using renewable energy sources – is now possible in India using Ohmium’s technology solutions. Converting cement, steel, and fertilizing manufacturing in India to green hydrogen is a key enabler for India to achieve net-zero carbon emissions.
IITMRP and Ohmium will work together to re-power campuses throughout India with 100% renewable energy.
US headquartered Ohmium has R&D centers in Silicon Valley (USA) and Bangalore (India), and manufacturing center in India.
