BSES Partners TERI, Panasonic, CEEW to Launch Power Saving Schemes

Delhi power distributor BSES has partnered with TERI, Panasonic India and Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) to launch 3 ‘ambitious’ Demand Side Management Programs

As part of its Demand Side Management program, Delhi’s power distribution company BSES yesterday announced that sister company BSES Yamuna Power Ltd (BYPL) has partnered with TERI, Panasonic India and the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) to launch three initiatives.

BSES in a statement said the three initiatives are “behavioral energy saving app, Green Division concept and solar microgrids with battery storage.” These initiatives have the potential to save around 380 million units (MU) of electricity and 2.6 lakh tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

Behavioural Energy Saving App in association with TERI

Developed in partnership with energy resources institute TERI, the behavioral energy saving app, ‘Susthome‘, has been designed to try influence and mould a consumer’s behavior towards energy usage, the statement said.

The app will track a consumer’s energy consumption patterns, analyze them, compare them to that of similar homes in the vicinity and show the energy-saving potential.

If their consumption is higher than that of similar more energy efficient homes, it will also provide customized and tailored solutions. Essentially, it will hand-hold the enlisted consumers in reducing their energy consumption, carbon footprint and electricity bills by influencing their behavioral patterns,” it said.

In the first phase, a pilot is being rolled out in select cooperative group housing societies in the Mayur Vihar area. In the second phase, the initiative will be scaled-up to cover around 2 lakh residential consumers and is expected to help them save up to 10 percent in energy bills, BSES said.

This initiative has the potential to save around 72 MUs and over Rs 29 crore annually. It will also result in even more efficient management of power demand and potential to reduce consumption by around 8-10 MW in the east and central Delhi areas under BYPL’s jurisdiction, the statement said.

Green Division (zone) Concept with TERI

Based on the smart city concept, the Green Division will be a carbon-neutral model zone comprising “net positive energy buildings”, solar power generation, electric vehicles (EVs), energy efficiency programs, efficient waste management, DSM and minimal paper consumption via digitization, BSES said. The Green Division will work at levels of both the utility (BYPL) and the consumer.

A pilot project and a concept demonstrator is being implemented at BYPL office locations in the Anand Lok sub-division part of Mayur Vihar division. The pilot project has potential energy savings of around 2.52 MU annually. Once rolled-out across BYPL, it has the potential to save around 300 MU and a reduction of 2 lakh tonnes of Co2,” the release said.

Solar Micro Grids With Energy Battery Storage with Panasonic and CEEW

In partnership with Panasonic India, BYPL has also launched a pilot to establish solar microgrids, “becoming one of the first discoms in the country to do so in an urban setting.”

For this project, a technology demonstrator in the form of four such microgrids, have been set up at BYPL offices in east Delhi that is combining rooftop solar with lithium-ion battery energy storage systems.

The initial results of the pilot project at four BYPL locations in east Delhi show that over this period only 8 percent of grid power (net of exports) was used. The balance 92 percent was generated and met through the solar plant coupled with energy battery storage,” the statement said. According to the statement, these DSM initiatives have the potential for a load reduction of over 100 MW in east and central Delhi areas.
