BPCL to form JV with Sembcorp & GPS Renewables to develop green hydrogen, CBG

Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) has announced plans to establish two new joint ventures to boost its clean energy initiatives. The state-owned oil refiner will partner with Sembcorp Green Hydrogen India to develop green hydrogen projects and with GPS Renewables to construct compressed biogas (CBG) plants nationwide.

These ventures are integral to the broader goal of BPCL for achieving net-zero emissions and contributing to India’s shift towards cleaner energy.

In a regulatory filing, BPCL emphasized the importance of these collaborations in advancing its sustainability agenda. The partnership with GPS Renewables is particularly significant as it will help BPCL meet the government’s mandate for CBG blending, aligning with national efforts to promote renewable energy and reduce carbon emissions.

BPCL highlighted in the filing that these new ventures are important to supporting India’s energy transition while advancing the company’s own carbon neutrality goals. The joint venture agreements will be finalized following regulatory approval.

Moreover, BPCL board has approved a $136 million investment to expand its pipeline capacity, enhancing the infrastructure needed to support its evolving energy mix.

A Committed Player To Clean Fuels

Recently, BPCL had signed agreement with the Chhattisgarh Biofuel Development Authority (CBDA), and the municipal corporations of Raipur and Bhilai the twin big cities of India with aim to produce Compressed Bio Gas (CBG) in Chhattisgarh. It will also be building a CBG project on 10 acres of land in Brahmapuram, Kerala, near a dump site.

Earlier this year, BPCL secured a green hydrogen manufacturing capacity of 2,000 metric tons under Bucket II from SECI, becoming the sole recipient of awards in the category.
