Biogas plant comes up in Karnali, Nepal

In Birendranagar, Surkhet district of Nepal, a biogas facility has been established to convert biodegradable waste into clean energy and organic fertilizer. KP Commercial Pvt Ltd, the first and only industry focused on environmental sanitation and hygiene in Karnali Province, spearheaded this initiative. Local entrepreneur Krishna Prasad Dhakal invested Rs 140 million to construct the biogas plant, capable of processing 30 tonnes of waste with a 3,000 cubic meter capacity.

Currently, the biogas plant yields 9 tonnes of organic matter, 15,000 liters of liquid manure, and 720 kg of compressed natural gas (CNG). Funding from the federal and provincial governments, amounting to Rs 50 million and Rs 17.2 million respectively, supported the establishment of the new biogas plant.

Dhakal, the owner of the biogas plant, emphasized the plant’s contribution to environmental protection, climate change mitigation, and job creation, aligning with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

He personally relies on biogas for cooking, eliminating the need for LPG cylinders for his household. Dhakal has extended this technology to over 4,000 households, supporting Karnali Province’s organic campaign.
