In a groundbreaking development, a bio-CNG or biogas plant could be established at the Dhanwapur sewage treatment plant (STP) in Gurgaon. The objective of the authorities is to optimize resource utilization and produce renewable energy. This initiative forms part of the expansion strategy of Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) which involves increasing the capacity of the Dhanwapur STP by an additional 100 MLD. This is to preventing untreated water from entering into the Najafgarh drain.
The project is estimated to cost Rs 166 crore, and bids have already been invited by the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority. Following allotment, the project is projected to take two and a half years to complete.
The bio-CNG plant will have the capacity to generate 5,000-10,000 cubic meters of biogas, which can be supplied to gas distribution companies in the city. Additionally, alongside the 100 MLD STP, the Authority will install 200 MLD main pumping stations at the site to ensure efficient STP operation.
Rajesh Bansal, chief engineer of GMDA’s Infra-II division, emphasized the necessity of improved wastewater management in response to the city’s growing population. With the additional 100 MLD capacity, the Dhanwapur STP’s total capacity will reach 318 MLD.
Furthermore, the bio-CNG plant will not only offer a sustainable energy source but also contribute to operational cost savings for the plant.
Today, Dhanwapur STP receives nearly 215 MLD of sewage discharge from Sector 1 to 23, 33 to 37 against its existing capacity of 218 MLD. The wastewater from surrounding villages is also coming into this STP only.
Previously, GMDA had planned to construct an additional 100 MLD STP with provisions for electricity generation from methane gas produced onsite. A tender for this project was floated in September 2022. However, following a directive from the chief minister in March 2023, the Authority decided to revisit the design plan, leading to the cancellation of the tendering process.
