Mitsubishi Chemical launches biomass based ‘BENEBiOL’ to enhance sustainability

As the world’s first polycarbonatediol derived from biomass, BENEBiOL has grades boast over 80% biobased content and will be primarily used as a core raw material in producing polyurethane resins.

Mitsubishi Chemical Group (MCG) has introduced new grades of BENEBiOL, a biomass-based polycarbonatediol with enhanced bio-based content. The company said that it will be exhibiting the grades in a panel display in an expo at Makuhari Messe this month end.

As the world’s first polycarbonatediol derived from biomass, BENEBiOL is primarily used as a core raw material in producing polyurethane resins.

Mitsubishi Chemical mentions that the new formulation of BENEBiOL enables manufacturers to achieve superior properties in polyurethane resins, offering greater flexibility without sacrificing chemical resistance. It also enhances stain resistance and provides a unique tactile feel, setting it apart from traditional petroleum-based products.

These advanced resins are highly versatile, with applications spanning industries such as automotive paints and coatings, furniture, outdoor products, and synthetic leather.

Previously, BENEBiOL grades had a biobased content ranging from 20% to 50%. However, Mitsubishi Chemical introduced HSS and NLDS grades boast over 80% biobased content. Moreover, Mitsubishi Chemical has transitioned some of its petroleum-based grades to biomass-based versions under the NLS line, ensuring that all BENEBiOL products now offer renewable alternatives.
