Brazil’s Grupo Potencial to invest $109 million to build world’s largest biodiesel plant
The plant is located in Paraná and will boost its annual biodiesel production from 900 million liters to 1.62 billion liters.
Brazil’s Grupo Potencial has revealed that it will be investing 600 million reais or nearly US$109 million to increase biodiesel production at one of its plants that will also make it as the world’s largest soy oil-based biofuel facility.
This big investment aligns with the Brazilian government’s efforts to expand the use of biofuels domestically. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is expected to sign the “Fuel of the Future” bill, which aims to promote the gradual increase of biodiesel blending in diesel fuel, among other measures to support the country’s energy transition.
The plant is located in Paraná and will boost its annual biodiesel production from 900 million liters to 1.62 billion liters. Already the largest biodiesel producer in Brazil, the expansion of Grupo Potencial expansion will begin in 2025 and is expected to be completed by 2026.
As per reports, this increase in production will help meet rising market demand, driven by legislation that will gradually increase the biodiesel blend in diesel to 25% by 2035, from the current 14%. Grupo Potencial’s investment is a strategic move to strengthen its position in this expanding market as Brazil transitions toward cleaner energy sources.
Arnoldo Hammerschmidt, head of Grupo Potencial, emphasized the global momentum towards renewable energy, noting Brazil’s key role in this shift. He highlighted the country’s efforts to ensure legal certainty and predictability for biofuel investments, which will provide greater stability in the energy market.
This investment is part of Brazil’s broader strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reliance on fossil fuels. The “Fuel of the Future” law is expected to incentivize biofuel production, including biodiesel, ethanol, and green hydrogen, further cementing Brazil’s leadership in renewable energy. Grupo Potencial’s decision reflects confidence in the country’s renewable energy policies and marks a significant step in Brazil’s energy transition towards a cleaner, more sustainable future.
Brazil has been emerging as a leader in the bioenergy sector including the production of biodiesel. As per statistics, the South American country’s biodiesel capacity stood 14.89 billion gallons per year in 2024. This was an increase from 14.378 billion gallons recorded in 2023.
