Tecnimont, NEXTCHEM unveil first green hydrogen plant of GAIL in India

The new state-of-the-art green hydrogen plant in Vijaipur of Madhya Pradesh will produce 4.3 tons of green hydrogen per day, utilizing a 10-megawatt electrolysis unit.

The maiden green hydrogen production facility of state owned GAIL (India) Limited has come up in Vijaipur in Guna District of Madhya Pradesh. In a key development, Tecnimont Private Limited, a subsidiary of Tecnimont in India has inaugurated the GAIL green hydrogen production plant in Vijaipur. As per the official statement, this has been built in collaboration with NEXTCHEM.

This state-of-the-art green hydrogen plant will produce 4.3 tons of green hydrogen per day, utilizing a 10-megawatt electrolysis unit. GAIL now claims to be the pioneer in India to initiate megawatt-scale green hydrogen production, marking a significant milestone for the country’s renewable energy ambitions.

This GAIL project aligns with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to achieve a minimum annual green hydrogen production capacity of 5 million tons by 2030. This initiative is part of India’s broader strategy to attain energy independence by 2047 and reach Net Zero emissions by 2070. Green hydrogen is expected to play a crucial role in the energy transition, facilitating renewable energy storage, industrial fuel replacement, clean transportation, decentralized power generation, and more.

In May 2022, GAIL awarded the green hydrogen EPC contract for this project to Tecnimont Private Limited and NextChem.  The green hydrogen production plant was to come up with a purity of about 99.999 volume per cent. An 18 month period from the date of letter of acceptance was given to the awardee.
